Learning Shapes a Lifetime of Health
Education is one of the strongest predictors of how long and how well a person lives.
Education can open doors to better jobs, financial stability, and health care. That’s why classrooms and early learning are just as important to a healthy community as clinics and parks.
Too many Alamance County children arrive at pre-K or kindergarten without any formal early learning experience, setting them up for bigger learning challenges. We can change what happens before school starts by helping caregivers and families talk, read, and play with young children in ways that set them up for academic success.
We invest across the whole path, from birth to career. That means backing families with young children, supporting the teachers and public schools doing the daily work, and helping parents take an active role in their children’s education.
We work alongside the public school system, higher education institutions, early childhood providers, and families.
Smarter Initiatives
The Basics Alamance
Ninety percent of brain growth happens before kindergarten. The Basics Alamance shares five science-based caregiving principles that help families turn everyday moments into opportunities to support children’s brain development from birth to age five. Families can also sign up for a free text service delivering weekly tips and activities.
Teacher Leadership Academy
Students benefit from great teachers, and great teachers stay where they’re supported. The Teacher Leadership Academy gives ABSS educators professional development, leadership training, and funding to turn their ideas into classroom projects that support better student outcomes.
Parent Engagement Program
Students do better when their families are involved, and schools do better when parents have a seat at the table. Over six months, parents and caregivers learn how curriculum, testing, and school governance actually work — gaining the tools to better support their students and engage in their schools.
Ready Freddy
Ready Freddy helps children and their families prepare for kindergarten. Through fun, interactive activities, pre-k children learn the routines and skills they need to be comfortable, confident and successful in kindergarten.
