Staying at the Forefront of Philanthropy

Our commitment to learning drives us to constantly evolve, stay at the forefront of best practices, and share valuable insights with others in the field. Recently, several of our team and board members had the privilege of attending two significant conferences that exemplify this commitment: Philanthropy Southeast’s Annual Meeting and the Harwood Summit. These events deepened our knowledge, sparked critical conversations, and helped us explore innovative solutions to the challenges facing our communities. We now look forward to applying the lessons learned and insights gained to our ongoing work and sharing these learnings within our community.

Philanthropy Southeast’s 55th Annual Meeting
Held in Nashville, Tennessee, this year’s Annual Meeting arrived at a critical time for the region and the country. As our communities face increasing challenges and divisions, the theme of “Leading Lights: Connection, Community & Courage” resonated deeply. The conference highlighted the importance of coming together to address complex issues and create lasting, positive change.

During the event, our team connected with like-minded professionals from across the Southeast to explore innovative approaches to philanthropy and discuss strategies for overcoming division. A highlight of the conference was the breakout session “Putting Passing Gear & SMIRF to Work,” led by our very own President, Tracey Grayzer. Tracey, who also served on the conference planning committee, shared her expertise on how foundations can drive real, measurable impact in their communities. We’re incredibly proud of her contributions and grateful for her leadership.

The Harwood Summit
Last month, some of our team and community members also attended the 2024 Harwood Summit at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture. The Summit, known for its unique approach to fostering open, in-depth conversations, brought together diverse leaders to explore some of the toughest challenges facing communities today. Without presentations or PowerPoints, the event focused on small-group discussions, providing participants with the opportunity to reflect, share personal experiences, and brainstorm solutions to issues like rebuilding trust, overcoming impasses, and navigating the cultural divisions gripping our society.

The Harwood Summit offered a rare, rejuvenating space for reflection and connection, leaving participants with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities before us. It’s a reminder that meaningful change often begins with deep, honest conversations and a collective commitment to action.

Looking Ahead
These conferences reaffirmed our team’s dedication to learning, collaboration, and leadership within the field of philanthropy. By attending and engaging in these events, we not only expand our own knowledge and practices but also contribute to a broader movement toward a just and connected society. We are excited to return to our work with new insights, strengthened relationships, and a renewed sense of hope for the future.

As we continue to build connections, confront challenges, and share what we’ve learned, we remain committed to being a leading force for positive change in our communities.
