Impact Alamance Invests in ABSS Classrooms with $47,000 in DonorsChoose Matching Funds

Between August 2024 and May 2025, Impact Alamance invested more than $47,000 in matching funds to support Alamance-Burlington School System (ABSS) teachers through DonorsChoose, a nonprofit crowdfunding platform that empowers educators to bring their classroom project ideas to life.

By offering a dollar-for-dollar funding match, Impact Alamance amplified the power of community giving, doubling donations and expanding the reach of every public contribution. This initiative funded 102 classroom projects, supported 72 ABSS teachers, and reached over 16,500 students across Alamance County.

Impact Alamance first launched the DonorsChoose Initiative in August 2024 with an initial $35,000 investment approved by the Impact Alamance Board of Directors. In partnership with the Alamance Community Foundation, the total matching funds rose to $40,000. In May 2025, the Board approved an additional $13,097 in matching funds, fully funding 13 more projects on the ABSS DonorsChoose page and extending the initiative’s impact.

From providing new notebooks, folders, and technology to streamline classroom organization, to funding hands-on STEM experiences and new literacy initiatives, this investment helped alleviate the financial burden of educators while enhancing student learning outcomes at every level of public education.

The initiative has supported high school students with broader opportunities to explore their interests and build confidence through real-world experience. At Southeast Alamance High School, the Make and Take Resource Closet, a fully equipped makerspace complete with tools and crafting supplies, has empowered students to design and develop creative projects while building practical skills. At Southern Alamance High School, new cameras for the Yearbook Club and journalism classes offer students the opportunity to discover potential career interests with hands-on experience in media and storytelling.

DonorsChoose projects have also supported younger learners, allowing teachers to invest in programs that target critical academic building blocks. A project at Marvin B Smith Elementary School created a classroom library to support Book Study groups that build reading stamina and comprehension while fostering a lifelong love of reading among third graders. At Hawfields Middle School, 8th graders gained access to a vocabulary and critical thinking program designed to improve academic outcomes and prepare them for future educational opportunities.

By filling crucial gaps, Impact Alamance’s DonorsChoose matching initiative serves historically underfunded classrooms and ensures students across Alamance County have the tools and opportunities they need to thrive.

Impact Alamance’s Board of Directors has also recently approved a proposal to contribute an additional $40,000 in DonorsChoose matching dollars for the upcoming 2025-2026 school year. This renewed investment reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting educators and enhancing student learning across Alamance County.

By continuing to match public donations dollar-for-dollar, Impact Alamance will help bring even more classroom projects to life, ensuring teachers have the resources they need and students have access to enriching, hands-on learning experiences.
