Formed in March of 2015, the Alamance Wellness Collaborative (AWC) brings together leaders from across sectors–from public health and city planning to education, parks and recreation, business and nonprofits–to implement strategies that promote community wellness throughout Alamance County. By taking a countywide, collaborative approach, members from various municipalities and agencies work more efficiently toward shared goals that support long-term health and wellbeing.
The Collaborative focuses on increasing access to trails and active transportation, supporting healthy school environments, securing funding for built environment improvements and advocating for local and state policy change. Through this work, the Collaborative is fostering new partnerships, strengthening understanding of systems-level change and creating a community where all residents have access to the resources they need to live healthy, active lives.
The AWC has released findings from its 2024 member survey, revealing significant progress in its mission to promote active living, healthy eating and belonging in Alamance County. The results highlight a strong sense of collaboration, increased awareness of health equity and a growing commitment to inclusive, community-centered initiatives.
Key Findings from Annual AWC Member Survey:
- Partnerships & Collaboration: A majority of respondents (93%) reported forming new or deeper working relationships and closer collaboration on shared initiatives. Members also reported gaining a deeper understanding of effective community engagement strategies, along with insights into policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) change—key tools driving more responsive and impactful wellness efforts across Alamance County.
- Equity & Inclusion Focus: Survey respondents reported new efforts to make public spaces more accessible, including new partnerships with local parks departments to enhance accessibility for differently abled community members on new park projects. Members also reported an increased interest in grant opportunities that would help fund inclusive and accessible built environment spaces.
- Impact on Day-to-Day Work: Members described implementing more equity driven approaches within their organizations, and an interest in focusing on policy areas that align with AWC’s strategic goals, including equity and inclusion, improving health in schools, and expanding access to recreational spaces. Another recurring interest among respondents was bridging divides and building a more connected Alamance County.
As the Collaborative moves forward with its 2025-2029 Strategic Plan, members expressed an eagerness to learn more about successful local wellness initiatives, systems change efforts and opportunities for collaboration and collective action. The 2024 survey reaffirms that AWC continues to be a vital space for collaboration, learning and leadership in community wellness.
